The Mortimers of Hampshire

An account of a branch of the Mortimer family who lived in Alverstoke, Gosport, and Portsea (in present day Portsmouth), Hampshire.

A branch of the Mortimer family lived in Alverstoke, Hampshire, from 1701. Alverstoke was a large rural parish west south of Fareham and west of Portsea island, which is now part of the city of Portsmouth. The first known member of this family was John Mortimer, who lived near Brockhurst in Alverstoke in 1675:

John Mortimer (c.1640-aft.1675)

John Mortimer was the first of the Mortimer family to live near Alverstoke. He was presumably born in Hampshire in 1640. John married Ursula, whose maiden name is unknown, and they had a son John.

John Mortimer (1675-1731)

John Mortimer was bapt. 14 Dec 1675, Alverstoke, which record mentioned he was born in Nov 1675. He married Elizabeth before 1701, whose maiden name is unknown. Searches have not revealed any marriage record. John was a wheelwright in Brockhurst, Alverstoke, and made a will dated 1731. He died the same year, and was bur. 20 Sep 1731 Alverstoke. Elizabeth his widow was bur. 15 Nov 1747. John and Elizabeth had the following children:

1. John Mortimer 1701-aft.1749, bapt. 14 Jul 1701 Alverstoke, who also became a master wheelwright like his father. He lived in Alverstoke in 1649, in which year he took on an apprentice wheeler.

6. Philip Mortimer 1711, bap. 16 Apr 1711, m. 1 Sarah Hickley 2 Feb 1737/8 Gosport, m. 2. Sarah Basell, 21 Aug 1746, he lived at Portsmouth Common, Portsea, and was a sawyer. Philip was bur. 30 Jan 1790, Portsea. Sarah his wife may have died 1783, 1788 or 1789, Portsea. Philip and his first wife had three children:

iii. William Mortimer 1743-1779, bap. 7 Aug 1743, who m. Mary Beginsfield, 21 Jul 1764 Alverstoke. They had a daughter Mary b. 1765. He was bur. 9 Aug 1779 Alverstoke.

Thomas Mortimer of Alverstoke (1705-aft.1749)

Thomas was born in 1704, the son of John and Elizabeth Mortimer of Alverstoke. He was bap. 15 Jan 1704/5

 

 

James Mortimer of Bitton (1802- ), bapt. in 1802, who moved to Somerset before 1824, where he worked as a hatter. He was convicted of leaving his master’s work 23 Oct 1824 Taunton, and sentenced to 7 days hard labour. He afterwards moved to Bitton near Bristol, Gloucestershire, and m. Mary Lovelace (c.1810- ) 31 Aug 1834 Bitton St Mary, they had the following children. James continued to work as a hatter in Bitton. James died in 1873 and was bur. 16 Mar 1873, Oldland.(1802-1873);

1. Elizabeth Ann, 1837-1844, b. 1837 Bitton, bur. 2 Feb 1844 Bitton, aged 6.

2. Philip Mortimer 1838-1919, Hatter, bap. 11 Nov 1838 Oldland St Anne, m. Jane Franklin, Christmas Day 1858, Bitton. James died in 1919, and was bur. 22 Feb 1919, Oldland St Anne, Gloucestershire. Philip and Jane had the following children.

i. Isabella c.1861-1935, m. William Edward Morgan, 15 May 1886, and bur. 27 Feb 1935, Oldland.

ii. Albert Mortimer 1863-1943, b. 1863 Bitton, Glos, m. Emma Eliza Godsall 22 Mar 1890 Hanham, Glos. They had the following children. They lived in Kingswood, Glos., in 1911. Albert d. aged 79, 23 Mar 1943 Abertillery; 41 Castle St., Monmouthshire.

Herbert William Mortimer 1890-1973, b. 6 Dec 1890 Bitton, bap. 1 Feb 1891 Oldland, lived at 42 Downend Rd., Kingswood, Bristol. Herbert never married, and died 15 Dec 1973, Kingswood.

Blanche 1894, b. 8 Mar 1893, bap. 21 Jan 1894, Oldland, d. 11 Feb 1969, Bristol.

Evelyn 1897, b. 8 Jan 1897, bap. 15 Aug 1897, m. Herbert Merrick 14 Feb 1925 Bedminster St Aldhelm, Somt., d. 1985 Henley on Thames, Oxon.

Ellen 1899, b. 27 Mar 1899, Oldland.

iii. Philip Mortimer II 1866-1950, b. 29 Jun 1866 Bitton, m. Lucy Jane Hicks 24 Oct 1885 Hanham Abbots, Glos. He died 17 Sep 1950 and was bur. 20 Sep 1950, Oldland.

3. James Mortimer 1841- , Collier, m. Jane Jones 17 Aug 1862 Kingswood Holy Trinity, Gloucestershire. They thereafter lived in Eglwysilan, Glamorgan, 1881-1911.
